Fashion to me has two meanings –

  1. Dynamic
  2. Static
  • In the dynamic sense, fashion to me is the ever-changing trends, which come, stay for sometime and go, and may return on revival through any popular media, or extremely famous celebrities, or the giant fashion houses. These come, linger, and go.
Fads and fashion are related yet fundamentally different social phenomena. Fashion is the more important of the two. Its general nature is suggested by the contrasting terms “in fashion” and “outmoded.” These terms signify a continuing pattern of change in which certain social forms enjoy temporary acceptance and respectability only to be replaced by others more abreast of the times. This parade of social forms sets fashion apart from custom, which is to be seen as established and fixed. The social approbation with which fashion is invested does not come from any demonstration of utility or superior merit; instead, it is a response to the direction of sensitivities and taste.
  • In the static sense, fashion is that mode of expression, that one would usually stick to. This one is very basic to every individual and varies from person to person. It is something one is comfortable with, and seldom wants to change. If one acquires or embraces a trend or style, and if it is likely to stay with them for a maximum/significant period of their lives, that is their “fashion”.

Some trends like the combo. of T-shirt/top and jeans is one of the most common or go-to combo. for both men and women, nowadays in many parts of the world. It depends upon the climate, country, customs, exposure to media, and the individual himself as what “static fashion” the individual chooses for himself/herself.

For instance, in India, with other trends (including the one above) many women wear this combo. of kurti and leggings/jeans, old and young alike. This is one of the go-to combos.

I may or may not be able to buy all/ most or even a few of the famous, expensive brands, but still be fashionable, because it comes from within and is distinct for each.

But, it is not possible to ignore that fashion is not just a business but a major industry sector, where companies enter with their brands, and either make a colossal name, huge impact and tremendous money, or , bite the dust.
